A 43-year old man was arrested yesterday for not backing the Bay.

Hastings police were called to Stortford Lodge at 10:36am after witnesses overheard a man saying he couldn’t discern Caroline from Georgina Evers-Swindell.

Undercover constables then followed the suspect on foot as he headed east towards the CBD, allegedly eating a Central Otago apple. The man was apprehended (pictured) 20 minutes later near the Opera House.

While praising the efforts of police Hastings mayor Lawrence Yule said the man’s actions were concerning. “We’ve invested in expensive marketing to stamp out this behaviour,” he said, referring to the recently launched ‘Hastings Alive’ shopping promotion.

A Whakatu builder will appear in Hastings District Court on Friday, where he will face one count of reckless disregard, and walking the entire length of Heretaunga Street without making a purchase.
