Offering a unique opportunity, six artists will share their artistic processes and ideas with the Hawke’s Bay public through a series of practical art workshops running October 15–18.

Unframed, a series of workshops with contemporary artists, gives people of all skill levels the chance to see how artists develop their ideas to produce a final work. Participants are also taken through a practical project with the guidance of the artist.

Organiser Emily Armstrong of The Pencil Room says she has had this idea for a while after attending similar events in other cities and decided to bring one to Napier. “I want to shine a spotlight on just a few of the many talented artists I see in Hawke’s Bay who are committed to their art and who are making interesting things happen despite facing the challenges that come with choosing to follow a creative path,” she says.

The workshops on offer are diverse ranging from oil painting to sculpting original art toys. “It doesn’t matter if you’ve never picked up a paint brush before – all the workshops are open to beginners. This is a unique opportunity to learn something new, to meet the artist and experience their work up close and personal” says Emily.

Workshops include: Sculpting Art Toys with Glen Colechin of Northern Monkey Toys (work pictured) who will introduce you to the world of collectible art toys and help you design and create your own; and Hand-drawn Typography with Mauricio Benega (work pictured) who will take you through the process for creating a text based illustration,.

Other artist workshops are: Geometric Sculpture by Chika Lindsay, Contemporary Collage with Peter Madden, How Not To Paint with John Lancashire, and Experimental Drawing with Gillian Appleby.

Funded by Creative Communities, tickets ($40-$50) are available from www.thepencilroom.co.nz
